It's a unique challenge to reimagine and modernize a client's childhood home, which was the task for the Balboa Residence. Starting with a 1920s Cape Cod-style home, the essence of this residence is brought into the 21st century through simplified interior detailing, an open floor plan allowing spaces to expand, and a more modern approach with the furnishings and art program. Altogether, it's a home that feels contemporary and rooted in family history.
In this Cape Cod-style home, we juxtaposed the more traditional architecture of the entryway with a Takashi Murakami low-lying sculpture and a large-scale Jaume Plensa bust. The art selections and their placement create a unique transition that bridges past and present.
The great room acts as an open-air pavilion through a series of sliding Nano walls of glass. The space faces the Balboa waterway, capturing the boats coming and going.
